Above the Clouds...
The oxygen masks are deployed in an aircraft when there is a drop in cabin pressure, a so-called decompression. Modern passenger planes fly at an altitude of about 10,000 meters. The "time of useful consciousness" is very short at this altitude. In essence, the air pressure is so low that the oxygen density is no longer sufficient to supply the brain with enough oxygen via the air we breathe. When there is a rapid drop in cabin pressure, you as a passenger, may lose consciousness within 30 - 60 seconds. To avoid this, an artificial atmosphere is built up inside the aircraft, which corresponds to an air pressure of about 1600 to 2500 meters altitude above sea level.
The safety instructions state: "In the event of a loss of cabin pressure, first put on your own mask, continue breathing normally and only then help other passengers.” This will ensure that you do not lose consciousness before you can help someone else.
Self Care
When we transfer this to our own life, we realize that it is just as important to be in good contact and stable with ourselves before we can be truly there and in service for others. This has absolutely nothing to do with being selfish. On the contrary: Only when we have found our inner balance and stability, we can give others our full attention and support.
Therefore, make sure to value yourself, to be a good friend to yourself. This will also make you become less dependent on the validation and appreciation of your fellow human beings. Don't be too critical of yourself and learn to forgive yourself for mistakes that you would have forgiven others long ago. My recommendation to you is: cultivate a friendly and compassionate relationship with yourself - this has a positive influence on your inner dialogue, on your personal mindset and will also have a positive influence on how you deal with your environment in the future – and how it will respond to you.
